New on the www.powersofsix.com website:

1 Information on what promises to be a fascinating WORKSHOP with Jennifer de Gandt and Lynn Bullock. ‘METAPHOR AND MOVEMENT’ will be a unique blend of Clean Language, Emergent Knowledge and Feldenkrais, and the theme for the two days (London 2nd and 3rd October 2008) will be ‘Stress and Habits’. Come and experiment, explore, play with words, concepts, images and movements in order to find out more about yourself and your patterns of functioning (Click on ‘Seminars’).

2 New to the Library – a series of short VIDEOS on Emergent Knowledge which feature the voice of David Grove explaining some of the concepts. Phil Swallow recorded David during one of Caitlin Walker’s training sessions in Liverpool last year.

3 Also new to the Library – the latest ARTICLE ‘A Clean Start to the Power of Six’, published in the June 2008 edition of reSource magazine. A ‘Clean Start’ is a prologue event to an Emergent Knowledge process. Here we explore it in some detail with client examples.

As always please give us YOUR FEEDBACK. One key Power of Six question to ask yourself is: ‘What do I know now compared to what I knew at the start?’ or ‘And what is the difference between what I know now and what I knew at the start?’ (Click on ‘Contact’ and fill in the online form or email us at info@powersofsix.com)

SIX fascinating new things to be found on the www.powersofsix.com website!

August 4th, 2008 · No Comments

1 HOW DID EMERGENT KNOWLEDGE EMERGE? WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT SIX? The ‘Power of Six’ tab on the Home page will take you to a summary of How Clean Language, Symbolic Modelling and Clean Space led to the development of Emergent Knowledge and the Power of Six, with a note on the key principles of the Power of Six process.

2 New to the Library – an inspirational story by Rob McGavock, an American friend and colleague of David Grove. With typical modesty Rob calls it ‘A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF A HEALING EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE POWER OF SIX’. This is a remarkable and moving account of one man’s experience with the master therapist over a period of sixteen years. Click on the ‘Library’ tab and follow the instructions.

3 Experience the Power of Six process for yourself – click on ‘Library’ and check out ‘THE ITERATOR’, an exclusive online tool developed by Matthew Hudson. Available in English, French, German, Dutch, Turkish, Swedish and Polish to start with (excuse the lack of accents in the software used to create this – we’re working on it). Other languages will follow. All you have to do is type into the on-screen box something you would like to work on and answer the online questions. If you wish the system will email your process back to you in complete confidence. The Iterator is very much in the spirit of David Grove’s mission to make his work simple, teachable and transferable, with the aim of considerably reducing the client’s direct dependence on the therapist or facilitator.

4 After trying out the basic version you could go on to ‘THE ITERATOR II’, an advanced tool that will take you through a full Power of Six process - a session of six sets of questions, each set slightly different. But be aware that you’ll need up to an hour of undisturbed time to explore yourself using this.

5 HISTORY IN THE MAKING. A fascinating analysis by Philip Harland of David Grove at work, showing the first stirrings of Emergent Knowledge in David’s use of Clean Language and Clean Space with a client a few years back. Go to the ‘Library’ and click on Philip’s latest article, ‘Emerging’.

6 Once you have read the articles or tried out ‘THE ITERATOR’… please give us YOUR FEEDBACK. One key Power of Six question to ask yourself at intervals is: ‘What do I know now compared to what I knew at the start?’ or ‘And what is the difference between what I know now and what I knew at the start?’ Click on ‘Contact’ and fill in the online form or email us at info@powersofsix.com

Everyday Six-ness

June 5th, 2008 · No Comments

I was travelling back from London yesterday after a great few days with my co-author and fellow collaborator Philip Harland. On the journey home I began chatting to a young lady next to me, after a little while she began to tell me about a particular issue she was having. I listened attentively and per the model of ‘Clean’ made no judgements or inferences of my own model of the world, even though it was and is tempting sometimes!!!

After hearing her story – I asked her if she was able to find someone else on the train she was able to tell he r story to, thankfully the person sat opposite was willing and was comfortable with been the next set of ears. I primed the new listener with the simple instruction, “Just be there and listen, it is very important that you offer nothing back”. This was the second iteration of her story, she looked at me for the next installment.

“Well, it looks like you’re going to have to find four more people to tell this story to, just let them know before hand what you want them to do… just listen” and off she went…

She only found one more listener whilst I was on the train. I trust that by now she has told her story 6 times each to a different person, and I fully expect that her problem is not constructed in the way it was when she first told it, in fact there is a very good chance it isn’t a problem at all now!

This is the experience which stimulated the development of the process in the previous post. So, what is happening here? Well, the iterative use of the question “Tell me your story” or “What is the problem?” has quite a magical effect, with each iteration in the sequence, new cognitions, new learnings occur, old beliefs and un-important information are dropped.

Have you ever had the experience when at college or work, especially in today’s age of computers, of typing out a thesis or piece of work and the power goes or the PC crashes? When this occurs what is the form of the work or thesis on the second iteration? How is it different from the original? Would you be willing to throw the second one away and do it again? Maybe another 4 times just to see how the thesis or work evolves?

That’s quite a challenge and maybe not appropriate for a letter thanking your suppliers for delivering so quickly, but what if it is for your own personal development, for a new research project, for a business development project?

If something is worth doing, is it worth doing enough times so it’s got that magical quality to it?

The Power of Six, EFT & the Problem / Solution Process

June 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Here is a novel way of self-processing or running a session with a client/friend!

Using the EFT tapping points:

EB – Eyebrow

SE – Side of eye

UE – Under eye

UN – Under nose

CH – Chin

CB – Collarbone

UA – Under arm

TH – Top of head

Run the following -

Whilst the client is tapping the first point (EB) ask them

“What is the problem?”

They should continue to tap the EB point until they have fully answered the question. Once complete, have them begin tapping the second point (SE) and ask again

“What is the problem?” do this on all the points from EB – CB

On the UA point ask

“And what do you know now?”

On the TH point, allow them to breathe and relax.

The second round now begins do the same as above however exchange the question “What is the problem?” for “How is it a problem?” again for six times and follow up with “And what do you know now?” + the breathing on the TH point.

The third round uses the question “Why is it a problem?” six times

The fourth “Why do you want to solve it?” six times

The fifth “How can you solve it?” six times

The sixth “What is the solution?” six times

Let me know how you get on!

Peace and Love

Matthew

David Grove

January 11th, 2008 · 1 Comment

We are sad to announce that David Grove, originator of Clean Language, Clean Space and Emergent Knowledge, died suddenly on January 8, 2008.

He was staying at the home of a long-time friend and collaborator in the USA, when he suffered a heart attack. Emergency medical treatment was unsuccessful.

David will be sorely missed by all who knew and worked with him. If you have tributes, stories or comments about David that you would like to share, please send them to us, or post them in the David Grove forum at www.cleanforum.com

A fund is being established to cover the family’s costs in repatriating the body to New Zealand, and for a lasting memorial to David. Further information will be posted here when available.

My candle burns at both ends, it will not last the night. But, ah, my foes, and, oh, my friends, it gives a lovely light.” Edna Saint Vincent Millay

David Grove comes from New Zealand, and has European and Maori ancestry. He graduated with a BSc from the University of Canterbury in 1972, then studied Business Administration for a postgraduate degree.

He was working in business when he came across NLP (NeuroLinguistic Programming) in 1978, and became excited by the way it looked at the structure of experience. Initially, he was planning business applications.

Then on one occasion he went along to an NLP business workshop to find it cancelled because not enough people had turned up. The organisers persuaded him to join another group… and David became interested in phobias and trauma.

He went on to work with NLP’s founders, to qualify as a Master Practitioner and to develop skills in Ericksonian hypnosis before walking away from NLP in 1981, during some of its darker days.

In 1983, he completed a graduate degree in Counselling Psychotherapy at the State University of Minnesota and began developing his unique style of therapy. He focussed his attention on resolving traumatic memories: memories of childhood abuse or, in the case of Vietnam veterans, war.

He went on to work with over 40,000 people in workshops and healing retreats in the USA, Ireland, New Zealand and the UK, including at a retreat centre in Cumbria.

He felt it was important to honour and respect a person’s metaphors, and that the therapist’s role was to promote self-healing by facilitating a metaphorical journey. He devised a set of questions designed to interfere with this process as little as possible, which developed into a “natural language of trance”, Clean Language.

These aspects of his work were modelled and documented by Penny Tompkins and James Lawley in their book Metaphors in Mind.

Most recently David moved his focus to an exploration of the therapeutic effects of space, known as Clean Space, and became interested in the science of emergence and how its insights can be applied in therapeutic contexts. He was working on this with a number of leading NLP figures, particularly in the UK.

Unique Workshop / Healing Retreat Process Unveiled

December 19th, 2007 · No Comments

Unique Change are very proud to announce the arrival of a fantastic process, modelled from the genius of David Grove.

We will be running several workshops and healing retreats throughout 2008, so watch this space and our website at www.self-alignment.com for more details.

Participants from our last workshop have kindly offered their experiences :

“Any way the weekend … Wow what a powerful and amazing weekend. I thought I’d picked a fairly mundane project to work with, but it was unbelievable what I discovered about myself and my beliefs. I was also surprised by the emotion attached to some of the work.

The experience didn’t end on Sunday evening or on the journey home where I was compelled to put chilled music on the CD and I continued to process in a way that was far more far reaching way than the confines of my project. This processing continued I guess until about Wednesday. I am confident in saying the weekend has helped me make a substantial shift in my thinking and knowledge about what makes me tick. THANKS.”

“There was time focusing on one of my goals and the way it was focused on meant that I had to be aware of all that I am seeking to achieve. There was time looking at the goals that I have focused on in the past and the type of person that I was when I was focused on those goals. Also there was focus on the factors that could influence the achievement of my current project/goal.

And all that done in a very resourceful or centred state including support where needed.

And all of it followed a coherent process.

So what came out of that lot? Immediately I came away more focused on my project and more comfortable with my project. I also felt that I had a clearer understanding of myself in that there was some aspects of me that I hadn’t realised before particularly connecting the actions of a young self with a current self. I am not a great one for action plans though I do believe that if you add something to a person, they are changed and therefore the decisions that they make and the actions that they take in the future will be different from those that they would have made without that addition.

Who knows what the future will bring to us…”

“My experience was intense at times, frustrating at times, amusing at times, and I consider my experience to have been life changing in the respect of providing a solid foundation for change.

Having completed all the stages of the process, the pristine self that emerged during the projector process (which I knew was significant but was not sure in what way) was the last piece of paper that I placed on my project. It was at this point I felt an overwhelming freedom from the constraint that my project had placed on me since the age of two years old. The emotion rose up from the location of my project within myself and passed through the location of the project before this one (which was indeed the cause). The emotion experienced was grief (expressed by a wailing noise) for the loss of the project, for which I now had a complete understanding of and which had now evolved into something different and indeed more positive. Not wanting to sound too dramatic, I would describe it as a rebirth.”

“It has exceeded my expectations, and on a personal basis proved most useful.”

What is the ‘Re-Alignment’ Workshop? :

This is a 3 day workshop based around personal / business related ‘projects’. We developed this workshop directly with David Grove (the creator of Clean Language) in September 2007. This is BRAND NEW material and highly effective! The theory discussed and presented is grounded in David’s Emergent Knowledge and Clean Space work, with some added extras.

What is a Project?

The derivation of Project is literally Pro (forward / in front) – ject (to throw), i.e. to throw forward. Our workshop is based on the principle of a project being something that you are personally driven to achieve, a goal or outcome that you have ‘put before’ yourself.

Why am I attending?

We can sometimes lose track of where we are on our projects, lose momentum, lose our purpose and sometimes even just leave our projects all together. Thus, feeling like we never achieve what it is we really want to achieve, sometimes we are so focussed on anothers goals and objectives our hopes, dreams and aspirations fade into the distance and feel out of reach.

What are the benefits of this workshop?

The principles behind the workshop are to allow an individual to re-align themselves to their project and purpose, to re-gain focus and energy, to re-connect with themselves and their project, so they can then ‘re-project’ their project and begin again with renewed vigour and zest!

Who, what, where and when?

The course is delivered by Matthew Hudson, an NLP Trainer and Master Practitioner.

The 3 day workshop costs £200.00

The workshops will be running throughout 2008 in UK.

Call us now on 0191 2520011 for more details and to book a place.
