CHAPTER 24
A movement is accomplished in six stages
And the seventh brings return.
The seven is the number of the young light
It forms when darkness is increased by one.
Change returns success
Going and coming without error.
Action brings good fortune.
Sunset.
The time is with the month of winter solstice
When the change is due to come.
Thunder in the other course of heaven.
Things cannot be destroyed once and for all.
Change returns success
Going and coming without error.
Action brings good fortune.
Sunset, sunrise.
A movement is accomplished in six stages
And the seventh brings return.
The seven is the number of the young light
It forms when darkness is increased by one.
Change returns success
Going and coming without error.
Action brings good fortune.
Sunset, sunrise.

New on the www.powersofsix.com website:
1 Information on what promises to be a fascinating WORKSHOP with Jennifer de Gandt and Lynn Bullock. ‘METAPHOR AND MOVEMENT’ will be a unique blend of Clean Language, Emergent Knowledge and Feldenkrais, and the theme for the two days (London 2nd and 3rd October 2008) will be ‘Stress and Habits’. Come and experiment, explore, play with words, concepts, images and movements in order to find out more about yourself and your patterns of functioning (Click on ‘Seminars’).
2 New to the Library – a series of short VIDEOS on Emergent Knowledge which feature the voice of David Grove explaining some of the concepts. Phil Swallow recorded David during one of Caitlin Walker’s training sessions in Liverpool last year.
3 Also new to the Library – the latest ARTICLE ‘A Clean Start to the Power of Six’, published in the June 2008 edition of reSource magazine. A ‘Clean Start’ is a prologue event to an Emergent Knowledge process. Here we explore it in some detail with client examples.
As always please give us YOUR FEEDBACK. One key Power of Six question to ask yourself is: ‘What do I know now compared to what I knew at the start?’ or ‘And what is the difference between what I know now and what I knew at the start?’ (Click on ‘Contact’ and fill in the online form or email us at info@powersofsix.com)

1 HOW DID EMERGENT KNOWLEDGE EMERGE? WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT SIX? The ‘Power of Six’ tab on the Home page will take you to a summary of How Clean Language, Symbolic Modelling and Clean Space led to the development of Emergent Knowledge and the Power of Six, with a note on the key principles of the Power of Six process.
2 New to the Library - an inspirational story by Rob McGavock, an American friend and colleague of David Grove. With typical modesty Rob calls it ‘A BRIEF SYNOPSIS OF A HEALING EXPERIENCE THROUGH THE POWER OF SIX’. This is a remarkable and moving account of one man’s experience with the master therapist over a period of sixteen years. Click on the ‘Library’ tab and follow the instructions.
3 Experience the Power of Six process for yourself - click on ‘Library’ and check out ‘THE ITERATOR’, an exclusive online tool developed by Matthew Hudson. Available in English, French, German, Dutch, Turkish, Swedish and Polish to start with (excuse the lack of accents in the software used to create this - we’re working on it). Other languages will follow. All you have to do is type into the on-screen box something you would like to work on and answer the online questions. If you wish the system will email your process back to you in complete confidence. The Iterator is very much in the spirit of David Grove’s mission to make his work simple, teachable and transferable, with the aim of considerably reducing the client’s direct dependence on the therapist or facilitator.
4 After trying out the basic version you could go on to ‘THE ITERATOR II’, an advanced tool that will take you through a full Power of Six process - a session of six sets of questions, each set slightly different. But be aware that you’ll need up to an hour of undisturbed time to explore yourself using this.
5 HISTORY IN THE MAKING. A fascinating analysis by Philip Harland of David Grove at work, showing the first stirrings of Emergent Knowledge in David’s use of Clean Language and Clean Space with a client a few years back. Go to the ‘Library’ and click on Philip’s latest article, ‘Emerging’.
6 Once you have read the articles or tried out ‘THE ITERATOR’… please give us YOUR FEEDBACK. One key Power of Six question to ask yourself at intervals is: ‘What do I know now compared to what I knew at the start?’ or ‘And what is the difference between what I know now and what I knew at the start?’ Click on ‘Contact’ and fill in the online form or email us at info@powersofsix.com

I was travelling back from London yesterday after a great few days with my co-author and fellow collaborator Philip Harland. On the journey home I began chatting to a young lady next to me, after a little while she began to tell me about a particular issue she was having. I listened attentively and per the model of ‘Clean’ made no judgements or inferences of my own model of the world, even though it was and is tempting sometimes!!!
After hearing her story - I asked her if she was able to find someone else on the train she was able to tell he r story to, thankfully the person sat opposite was willing and was comfortable with been the next set of ears. I primed the new listener with the simple instruction, “Just be there and listen, it is very important that you offer nothing back”. This was the second iteration of her story, she looked at me for the next installment.
“Well, it looks like you’re going to have to find four more people to tell this story to, just let them know before hand what you want them to do… just listen” and off she went…
She only found one more listener whilst I was on the train. I trust that by now she has told her story 6 times each to a different person, and I fully expect that her problem is not constructed in the way it was when she first told it, in fact there is a very good chance it isn’t a problem at all now!
This is the experience which stimulated the development of the process in the previous post. So, what is happening here? Well, the iterative use of the question “Tell me your story” or “What is the problem?” has quite a magical effect, with each iteration in the sequence, new cognitions, new learnings occur, old beliefs and un-important information are dropped.
Have you ever had the experience when at college or work, especially in today’s age of computers, of typing out a thesis or piece of work and the power goes or the PC crashes? When this occurs what is the form of the work or thesis on the second iteration? How is it different from the original? Would you be willing to throw the second one away and do it again? Maybe another 4 times just to see how the thesis or work evolves?
That’s quite a challenge and maybe not appropriate for a letter thanking your suppliers for delivering so quickly, but what if it is for your own personal development, for a new research project, for a business development project?
If something is worth doing, is it worth doing enough times so it’s got that magical quality to it?

Here is a novel way of self-processing or running a session with a client/friend!
Using the EFT tapping points:
EB - Eyebrow
SE - Side of eye
UE - Under eye
UN - Under nose
CH - Chin
CB - Collarbone
UA - Under arm
TH - Top of head
Run the following -
Whilst the client is tapping the first point (EB) ask them
“What is the problem?”
They should continue to tap the EB point until they have fully answered the question. Once complete, have them begin tapping the second point (SE) and ask again
“What is the problem?” do this on all the points from EB - CB
On the UA point ask
“And what do you know now?”
On the TH point, allow them to breathe and relax.
The second round now begins do the same as above however exchange the question “What is the problem?” for “How is it a problem?” again for six times and follow up with “And what do you know now?” + the breathing on the TH point.
The third round uses the question “Why is it a problem?” six times
The fourth “Why do you want to solve it?” six times
The fifth “How can you solve it?” six times
The sixth “What is the solution?” six times
Let me know how you get on!
Peace and Love
